Vinyl cutting is used for designs like vehicle logos or building logos. Vinyl cutting has been used more frequently because of the demand for advertisement for companies whether they’re products or movies on the side of busses, etc…Logos and advertisements are designed as vector so that design can be stretched out without it being distorted. This means that the vinyl cutters can design any size image capable depending on how big the vinyl cutter is. They can also print vinyl’s now which allow people to stick their products and advertisements to a wider range of different objects which promote the commercial.

Inkjet and Wide Format Printing have also progressed throughout the years as designers and advertisers have invested money into this to produce larger copies of this for the wider public. These are used for small posters and flyers.  Progress has been made also as printers use less ink than printers before saving the advertisers money.

Laser printers produce high quality prints by the direct scanning of a laser beam across the printer's photoreceptor. This allows many graphic produces to produce large quantities of their product.  However large quantities of electricity is needed to keep this product running.  On the other side it has helped graphic designers to produce their products faster and allowed the quantities needed to reach the wider audience. New develops in laser printing has vastly improved over the years though as printers can become connected with products such as the iphone or portable usb devices. For example Hp has introduced network connections into their printers that allow people to print necessary needs from any device.

Describe and evaluate the impact that file format, compression techniques, image resolution and colour depth have on file size and image quality.

When an image file type is compressed, it can lose quality and the effectiveness of the original image. Converting a PNG to a JPEG will instantly lower the quality, depending on the quality of the given JPEG, there will be some distortion regardless – more so if it is a low quality JPEG. While converting a large file type to a smaller one, colours are affected in a way that some of the detail becomes faded or darker than the original block colour – the image will become pixelated if you zoom into it and you will be able to see each pixel. The smaller the image size, the faster the download will be.

For the improvement, I chnged the font of the word 'Corby' and increased the font while giving both 'Corby' and 'Regeneration Project' a lighter green outline to give the words more emphasis.

I copied the ribbon I created, flipped it vertically and joined it with my 1st ribbon in order to make it into an oval ribbon. I then put 'Regeneration Project' into the oval and put corby above. I deleted Borough Council and added a flare tool in the back.

Digital images all have belonged to someone no matter how many times recycled take this for example

The first image (the Original Image) has been used over and over again because there are no copyright claims on it therefore it can be recycled like the images onwards.

Images that have either a blueprint, been brought or belong to an owner and is strictly claimed for them through copyright are able to be used under the permission of the owner and if hosted onto a site, the owner be credited with a copyright stamp usually imbedded onto the image. Some images that are not stamped with a copyright label are made not to be right clicked so that they cannot be downloaded from the internet unless brought from the owner. Copyright claims on an image can restrict the use of a picture down to home use only and/or not to be reproduced in any way (and sold on).

E.g.

Intellectual Property

This is when a person has exclusive rights over something that they have created. Effectively, the Intellectual Property law falls into the hands of copyright, trademarks, patents, and industrial design rights. In copyright, the creator of whatever is copyrighted can take legal action against any form of infringement or plagiarism. Copyright is a mark that proves something belongs to you and so gives you these rights. Copyright can be done by post or online by copyrighting a work of yours with a service or directory for copyrighting work. Trademark: "If you use an identical or similar trade mark for identical or similar goods and services to a registered trade mark - you may be infringing the registered mark if your use creates a likelihood of confusion on the part of the public. This includes the case where because of the similarities between the marks the public are led to the mistaken belief that the trade marks, although different, identify the goods or services of one and the same trader.

Where the registered mark has a significant reputation, infringement may also arise from the use of the same or a similar mark which, although not causing confusion, damages or takes unfair advantage of the reputation of the registered mark. This can occasionally arise from the use of the same or similar mark for goods or services which are dissimilar to those covered by the registration of the registered mark".

For this Stage of the image, I put in two images: One of the steelworks and the other of the Corby Cube. I did this by inserting these layers as separate layers by duplicating them to another open window (Layer > Duplicate Layer… > Destination Document etc…). I then brought them to the front and made then transparent by double clicking on the layer > Blending Options > General Blending > Opacity. I brought the opacity to a level that the Corby Logo could still be seen behind the image so that it seemed as though the Corby logo was in front of the images.

I then joined these images by adding a layer mask and making a gradient towards the image next to the other to seem as though it was fading into it. The Add Layer Mask Tool is near the bottom of the layers window by the side. I did the same with both images.

 The Images I Used.

Evaluation

I chose to use Adobe Photoshop for this because it is one of the best editing and easy to use programs for this field of work. I was able to combine imagery suitable for this task while keeping it neat and not spending too much time on it. I chose to use the lighting in a way or dark to light because it shows the old to the new and the images further illustrate this effect. I chose mainly green and pearl with the dirty greys and whites to also show the new and old and to show the progress from one stage to another e.g. The Steelworks to the construction of the Corby Cube. I decided to make the image relatively medium sized as this was going to be on the flyer along with the logo and all so it would stand out from the logo. It uses bright colours and shades of all kinds to catch the eye and the lens flare helps create the lighter effe

For the flyer I would use a JPEG image because it prints well as a bitmap type of image and the picture quality can be chosen to how you want it to look on the flyer. A JPEG is a bitmap image which is recognised by almost every computer but it can also be converted into a PDF file which can be veiwed on any computer as it is a flie type that opens with any graphics software and can be converted via photoshop when you 'Save As' and choose a file extention. When the flyer is sent digitally with the images being PDF files, the reciever will obtain the images without a problem whether that is through Word or PowerPoint. On the van I would use a vector type of image so that the vynl can be cut smoothly and put on the van unalike if it were a bitmap - One program for creating vector images is Adobe Illustrator which saves the file type as an Ai file, a PDF, an EPS file and etc... I would use JPG for the website because depending on the picture quality/resolution of the image , you can change how large the file is, so using a JPG image would be the wisest choice as you can have links to a larger version of the image on a separate page.

Trust Wide Screen Design Tablet TB-7300 - 32-btn Digitizer, digital pen - Wired - PC

A drawing tablet helps to create digital images as though you were drawing them in real life. You can use it to create images much easier and once mastered, you can create much better images that are much more proffesional.

Printer + Scanner

KODAK HERO 5.1 All-in-One Printer

You can use the scanner to scan real images into your computer to see on the monitor. By doing this, you can edit a picture, give it touch-ups, share it with people you usually couldn't, and print it off with either better quality than the original, bigger, smaller or the same.

Software – Adobe Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium

 (package)

Contains graphic software such as:

  • Adobe Photoshop

Photoshop is a graphical package which allows the user to create an image and then save it as various file types e.g. bitmap types. This software works especially in the fields of creating graphics images more so than others. Photoshop is compatible with a drawing tablet which allows sketching and further actual drawing techniques.

  • Illustrator,

Adobe Illustrator is a vector creating program. (A program which creates only line and curve images without  distortion. Different format than a bitmap image that uses pixels).

  • InDesign

'Adobe InDesign CS6 software is a desktop publishing application that gives you control over design and typography. Create elegant and engaging pages for print, tablets, and other screens. Easily adapt layouts to look great on a variety of page sizes, orientations, or devices.'

  • Dreamweaver

Dreamweaver is a a program for web design and creating your own website (https website). You can use coding or design straight onto the web page.

  • Flash Professional

Flash Professional is a animation package which allows the user to create a digitally animated GIF or movie depending on the project.

  • Flash Catalyst

Adobe Flash Catalyst is a design package which allows the user to prototype methods in image enhancement. You can create user interfaces, interactive components for other applications, etc...

  • Fireworks

Fireworks is a graphical package which allows you to create images and gifs. This program can be used in conjunction with dreamweaver to create interactive buttons and links to other pages.

  • Acrobat Pro

Adobe Acrobat is a program made to view any PDF file - Quote from web page "Adobe Reader software is the global standard for electronic document sharing. It is the only PDF file viewer that can open and interact with all PDF documents. Use Adobe Reader to view, search, digitally sign, verify, print, and collaborate on Adobe PDF files."

Evaluation

By using a computer as the above and one of the selected programs from the Adobe package for example: Adobe Photoshop, you can create graphic images specific to what you need and by using a mouse or a drawing tablet, you can draw images onto the program. You can use the keyboard to add text to an image and use shortcuts on the program. The scanner is used to scan real images into a computer and convert them into virtual files - once you modify the picture, you can print it off using the printer.

There are some limitations to the machine above take for example ther free space and how much you can store on it. The machine above also has limitations in mobility. It would be very hard to lug around everywhere and keep it from getting damaged during the move. It's all very expensive and so you would have to have it delivered to the location you wanted it to be taken.

The only program from the software above that has no real limitations in its area is Adobe Acrobat Pro because it is the only program that does what it does. Limitations for Dreamweaver are that you can't make your website look top-end unless you know how to code the program and so unless you know how to put the right figures in, you have to stick to what the program offers you to do without the coding.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Intel 10400i Configurator - Ultimate Workstation & Gaming System £1243.90 inc VAT (£1036.58 ex VAT)

Case £319.99

Lian Li PC-P80N Full Tower Case – Black

I chose this case because it was proved to be strong and its design was unique including colour preferences.

Processor £799.99 inc VAT - £666.66 ex VAT

Intel Core i7-3960X 3.30GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor

I chose this processor because I found that it was the best that I could find. It contains the following technologies: Intel Turbo Boost Technology and Intel Hyper-Threading Technology. This allows the processor to enable the computer to run at amazing speeds and the feedback of the product is also good. It doesn’t come with a cooler so I had to get one of those too. The features are below.

- Core Size: 32nm

- Socket: LGA2011

- Six Core

- Frequency: 3.30GHz (3.90GHz TURBO)

- Multiplier: 33x (Unlocked Multiplier)

- L2 Cache: 6x 256KB

- L3 Cache: 15MB

- TDP: 130W

- DOES NOT INCLUDE COOLER

- 3yr Warranty

With high capabilities, a high-speed computer can run graphics programs like Adobe Photoshop smoothly without having any problems.

CPU Cooler £72.98 inc VAT - £60.82 ex VAT

Intel Liquid Cooling Solution CPU Cooler

I chose this piece of kit because it was one of the pieces I had to get separately in order to keep the whole system cool from overheating and possibly melting components. It is one of the best on the market being a self contained water cooler. The features are below.

- Socket LGA1155/LGA1156//LGA1366/LGA2011

- Fan Speed: 800-2200 RPM (4 wire PWM)

- Fan Dimensions: 120 mm x 120 mm x 25 mm

- Fan Airflow: 74CFM

- Unit Noise Level: 21dBA@800 RPM / 35dBA @ 2200 RPM

- Radiator Dimensions: 150mm x 118mm x 37mm

- Pump Z-Height: 33mm

- Total Thermal Solution Weight: 820 grams

- Cooling Liquid: Propylene Glycol

- Thermal Interface Material: TC-1996

This would cool down the processor along with the rest of the system to enable maximum performance. If the processor wasn’t cooled down, this would have a knock on effect with a literal system meltdown.

Motherboard £289.98 inc VAT - £241.65 ex VAT

Asus P9X79 DELUXE Intel X79 Motherboard (DDR3 Motherboard)

Memory £299.99 inc VAT - £249.99 ex VAT

Team Xtreem 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 2600MHz C10 Dual/Quad Channel Kit

I chose this part because it was one of the top end pieces of kit and because the space it provides allows there to be less jumping around on the screen and more room for processes that allow more on-screen activity. This would be very useful for running graphics programs because sometimes when the computer processes take up too much space, a brush can jump and a design can be ruined or sometimes too many processes can take up so much space that a program may crash and shut down resulting in lost data.

Graphics Card 1 + 2 £419.99 each

OcUK Value GeForce GTX 590 3072MB GDDR5 x2

I chose this graphics card because it is capable of giving a smoother and wider range of graphics properties. It also allows for different graphic types like 3D graphics. 2 graphics cards will further improve the performance of the output of graphics. This would benefit a graphics designer that uses all kinds of designs be it CGI, 3D, 2D or anything else.

Hard Drive 1 + 2 £249.98 inc VAT - £208.32 ex VAT each

Crucial RealSSD M4 256GB SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive x2

The extra Hard Drives are for extra fast performance being 256 Giga Bytes each, they would store large design packages and programs, applications, files, etc… By having the extra drive, a graphic designer could easily have more than one package installed on the computer say for creating effects that another can’t.

RAID Option £10.00

RAID 1 Setup

Optical £159.98 inc - VAT £133.32 ex VAT

Pioneer BDR-206MBK 12x BDXL BluRay RW / 16x DVD±RW Drive - Black (OEM)

I chose this piece of kit because not only does it allow the reading of large storage space disk types but it also brings out the capabilities of storing more onto large disc storage. This could be anything from starting designs to pictures of finished designs so the option of storing the design digitally or physically is accessible.

(can write onto BluRay)

Sound Card £144.98 inc VAT - £120.82 ex VAT

Asus Xonar DG 5.1 PCI Sound Card with built in Headphone AMP

I chose this sound card just simply because it is vital to hear if there are errors on a computer and to hear the noises at a notable sound so that they are clear.

Power Supply £229.99 inc VAT - £191.66 ex VAT

Antec High Current Pro 1200W Modular PSU

I chose this power supply because it exerts the most wattage which is like more oxygen for the computer effectively. The more power it is supplied with, the more work it will be able to do and again, this all helps the computer to run very smoothly.

Operating System £149.99 - £124.99 ex VAT

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit

I chose windows because it is a system that you can get easily familiarised with, it is applicable with a wide range of different applications and software that can be used for this field of work. Windows 7 Ultimate has easier access to the system tools and management.

Networking £12.98

TP Link 300Mbps Wireless-N USB Adapter

I chose this adapter because I didn’t need a high-tech gaming adapter to connect to the internet wirelessly. It was also very cost efficient.

Monitor £293.99 inc VAT - £244.99 ex VAT

Benq XL2420T 24" TRUE 120Hz 3D Vision 2.0 Widescreen LED Monitor - Black/Red

I chose this monitor because it supports many types of graphics for on-screen activity. I also chose it over a larger monitor because there are settings of balancing the colours and shades on-screen that other one did not have for personal preference.

Evaluation - Intel 10400i Configurator - Ultimate Workstation & Gaming System & Mac Pro 12 Core

The good thing about the Mac system is that you can insert up to 4 hard drives into it up to 2TB(Terra Bytes each) – 8TB(Terra Bytes in total). In this case, the Mac dominates the Intel 10400 system in memory capabilities seeing at this is 12 Core and the Processor for the windows PC is only 6 Core.  This means that the Mac system will initially run faster and smoother than the Intel Configurator.

The internal memory is 64GB (8x8) for the Mac which also proves to dominate the Intel system which is 16GB (4x4). This shows that the Mac would run much faster than the Windows PC and store much more.

Judging that this is a computer for graphics design, the Mac is let down by its dual 1GB graphics cards whereas the PC has dual 3072MB graphics cards. The point of the graphics card is to enhance the rate of frames at which the computer monitor can handle and the graphics that can be output e.g. 3D graphics. The PC has better cards so using the Mac as an alternate system would downgrade the graphics a touch. The lower graphics in the Mac may result in bad display or relatively poor quality in some graphics.

As a whole – The Mac system is a whole lot more expensive than the Windows system – the windows system can be upgraded further still and be more cost efficient than the Mac system. The Mac system has a lot of new technology but the cost varies from the American website to the UK website by a few thousand pounds.

The Mac monitor is a 27 inch LED screen which allows everything to be seen across the screen clearly covering a wider area and meaning that there’s no need to sit so close to the monitor in order to see small text or need to change the text size or zoom. The Pc’s screen is a smaller 24 inch LED screen which is much cheaper than the Mac monitor that supports the output of many different kinds of graphics. The Mac supports all kinds of graphics too but it is very dear and with a 3 inch difference to the Pc monitor, the Pc monitor is definitely the better of the two.

Overall, the Pc is much cheaper than the Mac and doesn’t fall far behind it in performance, the memory is another thing but in total, the Pc is what I would recommend. The reason for this is because it has plenty of the capabilities of working as a graphics design computer and is cheaper than the Mac machine. It also provides everything that the Mac does and still runs very well.

If anything, the Mac could be used as the main machine because of its differences in performance, memory, etc… and the Pc is used as the alternative. I think this because the Mac has a higher price and would be worth it as it has a high standard performance, it can display various kinds of graphics, it can run almost any program that the Pc can and if not, a program better or close to the on that it can’t to make up for. The Mac also has an easy system to get around and is very simple. I believe that the Pc should be used as a backup as it is cheaper/has a lower budget and wouldn’t cost as much to replace. So to use the backup machine until it breaks down or something goes wrong and then using the main machine when necessary because of its expenses. The Pc is also very good in its graphics and can be repaired manually when it breaks down, the apple Mac needs to be repaired by someone who works at apple, an apple store or knows how to fix things in a Mac machine.

Unit 2: Task 4

Operating Systems

Mac

The Mac operating system was made by 'apple' being the manufacturer and is an interface that allows a user to access and interact with a computer system and run various programs and accessibles. The Mac organises folders and files by allowing the user to create, name, rename folders and also colour folders - to colour code folders into organisation. The Mac also allows you to see thumbnails for files such as word documents and images, etc... (The colour code feature is something that the Windows operating system doesn't have). On the Mac, folder icons show up as folders which inside them can consist of certain document types. The Icons on a Mac are also a guide to organising because certain file types (provided you have the right software to run them) have icons that are the same and can be grouped together or distinguished from other files. Names of files can also be organised. Name types like exe, doc, xps, JPEG, Bitmap, etc.. can be sorted apart from each other from the different names. On a mac, the main window that has all your documents in it will have a column on the left-hand side of it showing you different folders and documents in different areas of your Mac. This is a quick access feature and you can also drag and drop folders into this column to organise work into selected or custom folders and to get to work quickly. You can flick through the files in these folders and see the contents in the space above the files. This feature is the cover flow which allows you to see the contents of you file without having to open it up.

The 'Dock' on a Mac is the shortcut to applications installed on it. It can be adjusted so that it shows up all the time, is hidden so that it only appears when your mouse scrolls over it and the size of the dock can be adjusted too along with the number of applications you have in the dock. This makes the space on the Mac very clean looking and not like everything is scattered about in different places. The System Preferences window is the key to changing settings on a Mac.

Systempreferences
System_preferences
(The 'dock' above)

The Mac is very basic in using peripherals. The keyboard itself is a peripheral and as one, it connects easily through the USB ports, same with the mouse. These peripherals still need device drivers in order to alow them to function properly. The mouse can also be wireless but it is an easy setup - a simple matter of plugging one in or setting one up for bluetooth connection. By turning bluetooth on, on a Mac with buit in bluetooth or having a wireless bluetooth adapter, a wireless device may connect providing that the Mac system is up to date. Some hardware when plugged into a Mac has to go through iTunes to move files,

Syncing Bluetooth devices with your Mac (From http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1153)

  1. Make sure that your computer has Bluetooth
Make sure that your computer has Bluetooth built-in or that a compatible Bluetooth adapter is connected. Open System Preferences (from the Apple menu, choose System Preferences), then choose Bluetooth from theView menu.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth
In Bluetooth preferences, select the "On" checkbox (for earlier Mac OS X versions, click the Settings tab, then click Bluetooth Power: On). Make sure that you also enable Bluetooth on your device, too; refer to your device's documentation for instructions. If you want your Mac to be discoverable, select that option as well.
  3. Set up a new device
To set up a Bluetooth device, click “Set Up New Device” (in earlier Mac OS X versions, click the Devices tab in Bluetooth, then click "Set Up New Device"). Follow the onscreen instructions to set up your device.

To set up an Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse in earlier Mac OS X versions, open System Preferences, click Keyboard & Mouse, click the Bluetooth tab, and then click “Set Up New Device” to open the Bluetooth Setup Assistant. Follow the onscreen instructions to set up your keyboard and mouse.

The security on the Mac operating system has no need for antivirus software because there are no known viruses for the Mac. The security centre and constant scanning are out of the question because it is such a tight operating system and ultimatley beats Microsoft windows in that area. A Mac may also have passwords set for user accounts, applications and files so that no-one other than those who know the password can use.

The energy saving settings on a Mac can be maually set to go to a screen saver, and sleep mode to a certain set time in order to preserve battery. The screen brightness also effects the battery-life settings. By having the brightness at a low setting, less battery life is used.

Spaces

Spaces on a Mac is quite a nifty featuer for when you have many windows open and are trying to keep everything from being messy and having to minimise windows constantly. What spaces does is: Its allows the user to have multiple desktops open at a time to work on. this can be variable from two seperate desktops to sixteen different desktops.

Accounts

On a Mac, you may set up various accounts with or without passwords and restrictions to certain applications and settings. Doing this is very easy and is about the same as the Windows operating system's run of processes to do so.

Microsoft Windows

The Microsoft Windows operating system was made by 'Microsoft' and is an interface which too, allows you to use a computer and interact with it's features, accessories, programs, etc... Windows has ways of managing files by allowing the user to create, name and even choose a thumbnail for a file. You may also change the 'Icon' of a file to make it more distinguishable than other files. One last feature is the 'Briefcase' which allows you to organise and update data when the user wants to. (diagram below is self explanitory).

The 'start' menu on a Windows PC consists of the most recently used programs, My Documents, My Recent Documents, My Pictures, My Music, My Computer, Control Panel, Set Program access and defaults, Connect To, Printers a Faxes, Help and Support, Search and Run.There is also a tab which says 'All Programs' on it which is a list to all applications and programs that are installed on your computer. It is a large layout which can become very messy-looking and complex which is why when programs are installed, optional shortcuts on the Desktop are made. All the folders like 'My Documents' and/or 'My Pictures' on the start menu make it easier to organise files and access file types of the user's choice quickly. The start menu is essentially the key to getting around the whole computer from Disk drives and Hardware to Pictures and Music.

Unit 2: Task 3/Task 5

Antivirus software & Firewalls

Antivirus software’s purpose is to protect your computer from viruses and malware while firewalls protect you from harmful websites that can potentially damage/harm your computer which can either permanently damage your computer or lead to a number of different things depending on how the computer is damaged. Firewalls can have settings to how high the protection is and which websites and what kind of websites would be banned or protected against to minimise computer damage. An Antivirus software like ‘Avast Antivirus’ is free for the coverage of your own computer and protection from potential risks, viruses and malware. By paying, you can have all computers in your house protected against not only against viruses, malware and potential risks that can damage your computer but also it filter’s internet files and e-mail to narrow it down from spam to e-mails you can trust. The Avast Antivirus also has a sandbox feature which allows you to open a program under the surveillance of Avast which then checks if the program is safe or if it has any viruses or malware attached to it. By having an Antivirus software scan your computer daily, it can find corrupted and damaged files which can potentially slow your computer down. What some antiviruses can do is delete or try to fix the damaged files to stop your computer from slowing down.  This can also help speed up your computer and increase the performance.

Clean up tools for removal of cookies, Internet history and defragmentation

Clean up tools are on the Control Panel in Internet Options on a Windows computer.

Internet-option

In temporary internet files, you can clean your computer up by deleting cookies that are saved from websites, passwords saved on the computer, internet webpage history and form data which is saved data that is typed into forms e.g. surveys online like an auto-fill feature. By deleting these stored files, you can improve your computer's performance because less space is being used up for saved passwords, history, etc...

On Internet explorer there is ‘InPrivate’ Browsing which allows you to use the internet without your computer saving any history, cookies, form data or temporary internet files. This enables the user to have no saved excess memory on their computer and thus having nothing to clean up. Defragmenting is a process of which that your computer’s fragmented files are defragmented. Fragmented files can slow your computer processes and can leave your computer running very slow. Defragmentation and optimizing your computer’s disk drives makes it so that your computer takes less time to load programs and enables your computer to run smoother with the best settings.

Drive Formatting

By formatting your drive, you can clear all data on your computer and return it to factory condition so that the computer is in a brand new condition where the files are all default. You can also format your computer to save certain parts of your computer  to keep while clearing sections you don't need or want. By cleaning up your disk drives, you end up with more space in the drives that have been formatted which allows your computer to run faster and smoother.
